Welcome to the In Sync Training Series

Here we will strive to create a fun and productive learning environment.  Our foundation series is built upon mutual trust and respect from both the dog and handler.  We want both of you to approach learning and training with an eager, confident, and fun attitude.
If you have read ALL of the articles on this page and are ready to move on, let's begin our In Sync training.
For us, at In Sync, we focus our training progression on how you learn about what your canine partner is doing ‘mentally’. We want you to produce a dog that is both mentally and physically strong. We want you to become that handler who has trained their dogs to give their best while understanding all cues and remaining calm, fast and efficient.

Below are a series of articles that you will find useful to review during your In Sync Canine Training program.

Don't hesitate to come back and read again.  Many times as you travel through your training journey, previously read words will have a new and different meaning!

Have fun training and welcome to the In Sync Canine Training program!

Here is an Intro video to review before watching any of the online lessons series.  It will help to explain some of the theories and the learning process we use with In Sync Canine Training lessons.
Hello,  In Sync instructors and students!

We are here to help you with your journey with your canine partner.

Our focus is creating confident handlers that understand how to train dogs to their highest potential.

In this training series, we will discuss all of the basic behaviors for you to work with when interacting with your dog.  Don't rush through all of the lessons!  Take the time to really put down a great foundation that will last a lifetime.  We want a really solid foundation for both you and your dog.

We will cover all areas of training.   We will show you our training theories and why we choose to train with the method that we will be covering.  There will also be exercises for each behavior to work on, how to begin the training for each behavior, and why you want to be sure that both you and the dog understand the criteria for each behavior.   We will also have many videos lessons to show you how the exercises are used to teach each behavior.  We will teach you how to have confidence in yourself and your training abilities.

Always remember, training is about is what your dog understands mentally and emotionally, so don't just focus on whether or not the dog is physically doing a behavior.  We want our canine partners to truly understand each thing that will be taught to them and to ENJOY doing each behavior!

So a training session will give you the goals for that session and be sure to always go back and review the training covered for each behavior.  Never hesitate to review, review, review!  The foundation you create will be there for the lifetime of the dog, be sure to create a solid and fun foundation that your dog loves and is eager to always be there for you!

If you want to be interactive while training, we will also open up a Facebook group for students and instructors where we can discuss each topic amongst ourselves and be able to share videos of our dogs and how they are doing the exercises!

Welcome to our training series of the In Sync canine training program.  In this series we will cover all of the steps to getting your puppy, or your new dog, ready for a lifetime of learning!  This is also an excellent program for your current dog that you wish to strengthen their foundation skills.  Our goal is to have a dog that is eager to learn, happily embraces rules and boundaries, and wants to interact with you as your team mate!

The In Sync training begins with a food foundation program and quickly focuses on a partnership that doesn't rely upon toys or treats as a reward.  We want YOU to be your dog's ultimate reward!
You will learn about emotional anchors for dogs and how important they are for training a mentally balanced companion.  Our training methods are centered around having a dog that is mentally happy and stable.

Anyone can teach you how to get your dog to do "physical" behaviors, such as a 'sit'.   We focus on not only having your dog perform a 'sit',  but to also feel self-rewarded for being such a good dog, eager to do more, and always wanting to do even better for you!

You will also be learning how to use leash walking as an amazing training opportunity at any time, just by holding a leash correctly and using it in a manner that is easy to understand for both the dog and handler!  By using a leash properly, you also create a foundation of handling cues that will be useful in daily life and a variety of dog sports.
Just like the best equine race horses, cutting horses, reining horses, dressage horses, and other top level equine athletes, one wants to attain a high level of calmness and mental strength to create the top athlete. We want our canine partners to be just as strong mentally as they are physically.

Your dog will work to mimic you and your state of mind. We will show you methods so you can be consistent when training and be in a “calm and working” state of mind. We want you and your dog to work ‘together’ as a team, not as a handler struggling to control an over-reactive, overly aroused canine.

We will start with level 1 training to create a strong foundation for learning.  Foundation is about building a strong base of knowledge, enthusiasm and engagement from the dog. We will teach you how to have the knowledge to read your dog and give them want they need for each training step.  We want the dog to be highly focused on the handler, their cues and the job/behavior to be performed. We want to create a solid set of building blocks that progress from step to step in a clear pattern for both dog and handler.  To have that bond between dog and handler, the handler must truly understand what their dog needs both mentally and physically.

Dogs can’t ‘reason’ through a decision to resist an urge (like chasing a squirrel), so they have to trust their handler that showing impulse control has benefit over just reacting to urges.  During all training phases, we will teach you how to build trust and confidence in your dog and also in yourself to understand how to give your best to your canine partner.

During our training we will discuss how to strengthen the bond between dog and handler so it is easier and more natural for them to show impulse control through their trust in us and their positive experiences during training.

During our initial stages of training, we will use food to help us learn how to read out dogs and what their emotional response is. That will allow us to gauge whether we are getting reactive, emotional responses or thinking, non-reactive responses for the behavior we are working on.

When discussing the differences between ‘reactive’ and ‘proactive’ it is said that ‘reactive’ is acting in response to a situation whereas ‘proactive’ is controlling the response to a situation.

We want to create a thinking, emotionally controlled dog that works with cooperation and joy in teamwork.  We want a very enthusiastic, happy dog that is eager to engage in activities with their handler while staying in a calm thinking mental state.  They can learn from a handler that understands how to build that foundation of clear and calm thinking while learning.

As with any training program, the guidelines for that program should follow a consistent and easy to understand set of training theories.

Before you can effectively train your dogs, you need to learn why you do what you do.  You never want to blindly follow anyone's instructions without fully understanding what you are asking from the dog, how to ask for that behavior, and why you are using your voice, hands, and body in the way you are while communication with your dog.  Training is easy when you understand how and why you are using the method you are using.  We use down to earth training methods that won't get you lost in big words and complicated theories.  Let's spend our time training you to truly understand the learning process!

The training theories create the foundation for the training program.  If you review and understand the theories that created the training program, then the lessons are much easier to follow and help to build the team that you want with your canine companion.

With our In Sync Canine Training program we want to help you train your dog so both of you have trust in each other and confidence in each other.  By putting down a great foundation and also knowing WHY you train the way you do helps to build that trust and confidence.

Anyone can show you how to get your dog to do a behavior.   Anyone can teach you how to get your dog to down when you say "down".   Our goal at In Sync is to teach you not only how to teach the physical behavior desired, but for the dog to want to do it to please you and be proud of themselves and also for you to be proud of your dog and your ability to train them and understand the mental and emotional side of dog training.
We need to remember that in the very beginning, your puppy showed love and affection for "you" when they were babies. They knew nothing of high value treats or creating drive and enthusiasm from toy play. They wanted to interact with YOU when they met you.

"WE" are our dogs high value treat, or at least, we should be. We should be the true motivators for our dogs. But we have lost our confidence in the true human-dog bond that comes natural to the dogs and so difficult for us to imagine without a treat or toy. It is becoming so rare for anyone to envision "rewarding" a dog with "themselves". We are constantly told about how to use treats and toys to get our dogs to learn. "Be" the reward your dog really needs. Have that relationship where you truly "see" your dog's body language. Not an artificial body language created by an excited dog looking at a treat or toy being offered.  Dogs should not have to be in a highly aroused mental state in order to want to work for us.  They should be calm and focused, eager to learn, and without being in an overly excited state of mind.

People are becoming frustrated with being told that they can't train without treats/toys or a multiple set of treats and toys, depending upon their "value".  They are told that they must have a toy to get their dog to be engaged and motivated. Dogs are becoming more and more out of control while we reach for a higher value treat or toy.  It is commonplace for dogs to not come when called and to run off to be with another dog or another person.

In many cases, the food or the toy is used by the handler for when "they" feel good about what was accomplished. We live in a world of instant gratification and giving that treat or toy fills that need to show instant success in how the "handler" feels about the exercise. So many times the dog is not as mentally secure about the exercise as the handler is and much of the focus becomes on whether or not the handler is pleased with the performance and not about whether the dogs truly understands the criteria for the performance.

Once they get their puppies home, many people start teaching them that learning instantly involves treats and toys. They work very hard to remove the dog's initial bond to the people.  They only seem to want that initial bond when they cuddle on the couch or go to bed, when everything is naturally calm.

It seems that owners have lost faith that they can important enough to their dogs for the dog to actually work for "them" by using praise and touch.  They don't feel that the praise and touch can carry enough value for "working".   So they load up on treats and buy the latest coolest tug toy and teach their dogs that those things are worth working for.

Nothing could be further from the truth.  Praise and touch lower the blood pressure and heart rate.  Praise and touch allow the dog to work in a manner that creates a true bond of trust and confidence in each other, not a desire for an outside motivator.

Let's start on a journey to rekindle that natural bond between a dog and their owner.

Teaching by using the dog's natural way of learning

Picture
All of our foundation work joins together for the whole picture.  The first and most important part is how do we make learning easy by respecting the ways in which a dog learns naturally!  Let's make it easy on all of us by following a natural path.

Many times people only think of "reactive" dogs as those who lunge and bark and misbehave.  But a dog that is having an emotional problem can display it in many ways besides a verbal outburst. Some dogs walk away sniffing when they don't feel secure and emotionally balanced.  Others do "zoomies", or some show flight or freeze behaviors.  Dogs "react" to environment stress in many ways.

Our job is to increase their comfort and confidence in all situations, so the confident and eager dog that we see at home or in a familiar training area is the same confident dog away from home.  We want our dogs to trust us and we want to be able to trust them and that trust is built from a solid and confident foundation!

As we progress through lessons, we will learn how to teach behaviors that will be retained in all situations through confidence and trust, how to work a dog on a loose lead if desired, and feel confident that our "at home" dog will also trust us out in the real world and we can look to each other for a full happy life together.
